The Butterfly Sculptures Revealed

After weeks and months of work, the butterfly sculptures were finished.  Some artists had sent "progress pictures," and each one was met with excitement and a sense of anticipation at seeing the project "jell" as a single activity.

A reception for the artists and for the official public "Kick-Off" was planned for June 3rd at Hospice House.  All of the sculptures would be there, and the artists would receive the public recognition they deserved.

But first, a little preparation was required.

The sculptures required a solid heavy base for display. Cheboygan Cement Products, Inc. had made the bases, and each weighed at least 300 pounds.  When it was time to put the sculptures on the bases, Kari Couture, VitalCare's Development Coordinator, took on the task of set-up --with a little help from a well-muscled friend and a winch.

They made a

of the driveway.

They even enticed a Hospice House patient to go outside

for a close-up tour.

About 60 community residents and project supporters were on hand for the Kick-Off.
Artists received a very loud round of applause. The sculptures are evidence of how hard they worked.

The next day, it was back to the winch, chains and muscles to begin placing the sculptures where the public can see them.

The butterfly sculptures are now placed in locations selected for the public's viewing pleasure.  Besides in and around Cheboygan, you can find them in Cross Village, Onway, Indian River --even Mackinac Island.  For a list of which sculptures are at what locations, click HERE.
